Carriage Driving Sports Group for Drivers with Disabilities

Incorporating Horse Welfare into Our Training and Driving Routines

Open to drivers with disabilities with their own turnout, or potential to drive a school master.

Coaches (RDA and non RDA) very welcome as are helpers and those wanting to learn more about coaching and supporting this inspiring group of drivers.

CPD Certificates available and on foot delegates welcome.

Clubs who want to open up more opportunities for drivers will be made most welcome.

Driver sessions throughout each day with trainers Robert Buck and Sara Howe, both of whom are very successful international competitors.

  • Sessions will include simple:
  • Suppling exercise patterns
  • Self balancing exercises to encourage stiff ponies to develop
  • ABC of Cone driving
  • Development of approaching Obstacles

Drivers, coaches and on foot delegates will benefit from the interactive sessions with lots to learn to incorporate into their training and driving routines when back at home

Opportunities (subject to availability) for delegates to experience being on the back step.

Harness fitting help and advice available throughout each day.

Day 1

Group session 1- Robert Buck:

Practical - lunging the driving horse, what a session should include, way of going for the horse, scales of training, essential safety equipment

Break out 1 – Anna Davison MCSP:

Physio Talk/Demo – principles of equine physio and what the horse owner can do at home to maintain the horse’s health*

Break out 2: – Practical - RDA Nat Champs

Review of the obstacles, walking routes to drive/alternatives and considerations for horse welfare when driving obstacles plus good basic design

7.30pm - Dinner and talk - “Back from the World Para Championships”

*Anna is a Chartered Equine Physiotherapist and delegates with horses at this clinic can book a 30 min individual session with their horse for an assessment and a “take home” plan and video for £40 each.

Day 2

Group session 2 – Robert Buck:

Practical - warming up the driving horse when in the carriage, exercises to use, their purpose and application

Break out 3 – Sara Howe

Q&A for new/trainee RDA Coaches, potential coaches and RDA helpers

Group session 3: Practical, fun and Interactive “Judge what you See”

Driven demo dressage test marked by audience and discussion.
